When someone dies
When someone dies in a care home.
The staff will know what to do, and they will look after things until you are ready. If you would like to come in and sit with them first, you can.

What the care home will do
- A nurse or doctor will confirm the death. In a nursing home a registered nurse can often do this; in a residential home the staff will call the GP or NHS 111.
- The staff will call you, if you were not there. They will ask which funeral director you would like. Tell them R G Peate, and we will speak to the home directly.
- The GP writes the medical certificate of cause of death and sends it to the NHS medical examiner, who will usually phone you in the next few days.
Time to say goodbye
You do not need to rush. If family would like to visit before we come, tell us and the home, and we will wait. Most care homes are happy to keep someone in their room for a few hours.
When we come
We come at any hour, quietly and without fuss. The staff will gather the person’s belongings for you to collect later, or we can bring anything you would like them to keep with them, such as a favourite cardigan, a photograph or a rosary.
If they had a pre-paid funeral plan
Let us know, and bring the plan documents if you can find them. If the plan names another funeral director, the plan provider can usually tell you what your choices are.
