Help with paying for a funeral.
Worrying about money is the last thing anyone needs at a time like this. Please talk to us early and honestly: we will help you find a way that works.

How payment works with us
- We do not ask for a deposit.
- Our invoice is payable within 30 days of the funeral.
- We accept payment by bank transfer or cheque. We are not able to take card payments.
Money from the person who died
The funeral is usually paid for from the person’s estate, meaning their money and property. Even before probate, most banks and building societies will pay a funeral director’s invoice directly from the person’s account if there is enough in it. We can give you an invoice to take to the bank.
Check too for a pre-paid funeral plan, life insurance, a pension that pays a lump sum on death, or an over-50s plan. Trade unions and some employers also make death grants.
The Funeral Expenses Payment
If you are arranging the funeral and you receive certain benefits, such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit or Housing Benefit, you may be able to get a Funeral Expenses Payment from the Department for Work and Pensions.
- It can pay for necessary burial or cremation fees, and up to £1,000 towards other costs, such as our charges, the coffin and flowers.
- It will not usually cover the whole cost of a funeral, and any money in the person’s estate is taken into account.
- You must claim within six months of the funeral. You can claim before the funeral with our invoice.

If a child has died
Councils in Wales make no charge to bury or cremate a child under 18, and families living in Wales are offered £500 from the Welsh Government when the death is registered. If the burial or cremation is in England, for example at Emstrey Crematorium in Shrewsbury, England’s Children’s Funeral Fund pays the fees. When a baby or child has died.
Keeping the cost down
A dignified funeral does not have to be expensive. A direct cremation, a simpler coffin, family flowers from the garden, or holding the gathering at home can all make a real difference. We will always tell you honestly where the money goes, and never press you to spend more.
