Questions
Questions families ask.
Here are the questions we are asked most often. If yours is not here, please call us. There is no such thing as a silly question, and you will never be rushed.

When someone has died
Can I call you in the middle of the night?
Yes. Outside office hours, call our out-of-hours line on 01938 810 657 and a member of the family will answer, at any hour. During office hours, monday to friday, 8am to 5pm, call the office on 01938 559 256. If someone has died at home, we can come straight away, or in the morning if you would rather wait.
Do I need the death certificate before I call you?
No. You can call us straight away, and we can begin arranging the funeral before the death is registered. We will explain when and how to register.
How soon can the funeral be?
Usually within one to three weeks. It depends on the medical examiner or the coroner finishing their work, and on when the church, chapel, crematorium or cemetery is free. If your faith asks for a quick funeral, tell us and we will do all we can.
Can we see them before the funeral?
Yes. You can visit them in our chapel of rest in Welshpool or Llanfair Caereinion, by appointment, as often as you would like. Bring anything you would like to leave with them.
What should they wear?
Whatever you think they would like: their best suit, a favourite jumper, their football shirt, or a simple gown that we can provide. Just bring the clothes to us.
Cost and payment
How much does a funeral cost?
Our charges for an attended funeral are £1,780, plus fees set by others such as the crematorium or cemetery. A direct cremation, including the cremation fee, is £1,800. Every price is on our price list, and you can estimate the cost of the funeral you have in mind.
Do I have to pay a deposit?
No. We do not ask for a deposit. Our invoice is payable within 30 days of the funeral. You will have a written estimate before anything is agreed.
What if we cannot afford a funeral?
Please talk to us early and honestly. The bank can often pay our invoice from the person’s own account, and if you receive certain benefits you may be able to get a Funeral Expenses Payment. Help with paying for a funeral.
Cremation, burial and ashes
What is a direct cremation?
A cremation without a service at the crematorium. Family and friends do not attend, and you can hold your own gathering at another time and place. More about direct cremation.
What happens to the ashes?
We collect the ashes from the crematorium, usually within a week or two. You can collect them from us, we can bring them to you, or we can arrange for them to be buried or scattered. There is no hurry: we will keep them safely until you are ready.
Can they be buried in a family grave?
Often, yes. We will check with the cemetery or churchyard whether there is space, find the paperwork for the grave, and arrange for it to be reopened.
Do you embalm?
No. We do not offer embalming. Your loved one is cared for in our chapel of rest until the funeral.
Planning ahead
Can I arrange my own funeral in advance?
Yes. You can write down your wishes for free, and if you would like to pay in advance, we can introduce you to Golden Charter, who provide pre-paid funeral plans. R G Peate Funeral Services Ltd does not sell plans or give advice on them.
My mother has a funeral plan. What do we do?
Call us, and find the plan documents if you can. We will contact the plan provider and tell you exactly what the plan covers and what, if anything, it does not.
Still have a question?
If someone has died, please call us at any hour and we will come to you. For anything else, you are welcome to call, write or call in.
