Arranging a funeral

Floral tributes.

Flowers say what words often cannot. You order them directly from a florist, and we make sure they are in the right place on the day. These are the florists we recommend, in and around Welshpool and just outside Llanfair Caereinion.

Our florists

Florists we know and trust.

We recommend a few local florists, in and around Welshpool and near Llanfair Caereinion. Each makes funeral flowers with real care, from a single posy to a coffin spray. You order and pay for your flowers with the florist directly, and they deliver to us, so the flowers are where they should be on the day.

The fee our florists pay us.

The florists we recommend each pay us a fixed fee of £15 for each funeral they supply flowers for, paid when they deliver. It is the same whatever is ordered, and our florists have agreed not to pass it on to families, so you pay the florist’s usual prices. We take no percentage, and we add nothing to what you pay the florist.

You are always welcome to use any florist you like.

Tributes

Choosing a tribute.

Choose whatever feels right: there is no rule about who sends what. If you are unsure, tell us about them, and we will help.

  • Coffin spray

A single arrangement laid along the top of the coffin, often in their favourite colours.

  • Wreath

The traditional circle of flowers, from family or friends.

  • Posy or bouquet

Small and hand-tied, simple and personal.

  • Heart

A shaped tribute, often from a husband, wife or close family.

  • Cross

For a church or chapel funeral.

  • Cushion or pillow

A soft, full tribute, often from children or grandchildren.

  • Basket

Flowers in a basket that can be taken home afterwards.

  • From your own garden

Flowers they grew themselves, gathered by the family. We are glad to use them.

Lettered tributes, such as MUM, GRANDAD or their name, and shapes that tell their story, such as a football, a tractor or a favourite dog, can be made too.

Prices are the florist’s own, and you pay the florist directly. Ask for a price before you decide: every tribute can be made larger or smaller to suit your budget.

How it works

From your ideas to the day.

  1. Choose a florist

Call or visit one of the florists above, or any florist you like. Tell them the colours they loved, flowers from their garden, a word or a shape, and your budget.

  2. Give them the details

The name, and the date and time of the funeral, and ask them to deliver to us. If you are not sure of the details, they can ring us.

  3. Write the cards

Each tribute carries a card with your message. After the funeral we give you every card, so that you know who sent flowers.

  4. On the day

The florist delivers to us before the funeral, and we place the flowers on and around the coffin, so that everything is ready when the family arrives.

  5. Afterwards

Flowers are usually left on the grave, or shown at the crematorium for a few days. If you would like them taken to a care home or a church, or brought home, just tell us.

Sending flowers

To a funeral we are arranging.

Any florist can deliver to us. Please check the family’s wishes first: some ask for family flowers only, or donations instead, and their funeral notice will say.

Deliver to

R G Peate Funeral Services
Calkirk Buildings, Salop Road
Welshpool SY21 7EG
  • Please ask the florist to deliver by 9am on the morning of the funeral.
  • On the card, write the name of the person who has died and the date of the funeral, as well as your message.
  • If the flowers are going straight to a church, a chapel or the house, the family or the notice will say so.

Seasonal and local

Flowers in their season.

Wherever we can, flowers come from local growers, in season. They often last better and cost less, and they say something about the time of year they were given.

  • Spring

Daffodils, narcissi, tulips, hyacinths and blossom.

  • Summer

Roses, sweet peas, peonies, delphiniums and lavender.

  • Autumn

Dahlias, chrysanthemums, rose hips, berries and turning leaves.

  • Winter

Hellebores, amaryllis, holly, ivy and evergreen foliage.

Kinder to the earth

Many tributes are made on floral foam, which is a plastic. It does not break down, and it sheds tiny pieces of plastic into the soil and water. Ask for a foam-free tribute instead, made on moss, straw, willow or hay, so that it can return to the earth with everything else. Natural burial grounds usually ask for this. Green and natural funerals.

Family flowers only, or donations instead

Many families ask for family flowers only, with donations to a charity instead. We can collect the donations, keep a record of who gave, send the money to the charity and give you the list, so that you can thank people.

Questions

About flowers.

Do the florists pay you anything?

Yes.

Can you order the flowers for us?

We no longer order flowers ourselves. Each florist takes your order directly and you pay them, and they deliver to us, so you do not need to bring anything.

Can we use a different florist?

Of course. Any florist can deliver to us, and we will take the same care of their flowers.

How much do funeral flowers cost?

It depends on the size and the flowers: a posy costs much less than a full coffin spray. Each florist will give you a price before you decide.

When do flowers need to reach you?

Please ask the florist to deliver to us by 9am on the morning of the funeral. If you are not sure, call us and we will tell you.

Can we use flowers from our own garden?

Yes, and they are often the most personal of all. Bring them to us, and we will lay them with the coffin.

What happens to the cards?

We collect the card from every tribute and give them all to you after the funeral, so that you know who sent flowers.

Whenever you are ready.

If someone has died, please call us at any hour and we will come to you. For anything else, you are welcome to call, write or call in.
