Arranging a funeral

Places for a funeral.

A funeral can be held almost anywhere that mattered to the person: their chapel, the crematorium, a village hall, a hillside. Here are the places families around Welshpool most often choose.

Churches and chapels

Many funerals here begin in the church or chapel the person belonged to, followed by burial in the churchyard or the town cemetery, or by cremation. The minister will usually lead the service, and we arrange everything with them and with the organist. Services can be in English, in Welsh, or both.

Crematoria

The crematorium most families from Welshpool use is Emstrey Crematorium, Shrewsbury, about twenty miles away. A service there can be the whole funeral, or follow a service in church or chapel. We also arrange cremations at other crematoria in the area.

Emstrey’s fee for an attended cremation is £904, or £785 for the early morning service. See all fees on our price list.

Cemeteries and churchyards

Powys County Council runs the cemeteries in our towns, and many village churchyards still have space, particularly where a family grave already exists. We will check what is possible, reserve the grave, and arrange for it to be prepared.

Natural burial grounds

Meadows and woodlands where graves are marked by trees and wildflowers rather than stone. More about green and natural funerals.

Somewhere else entirely

A village hall, a hotel, a farm, a garden, or home. A funeral service does not have to happen in a religious building or a crematorium. Many families hold the service somewhere meaningful, followed by a short committal at the crematorium or graveside with just the closest family, or with none.
